Congratulations, they liked your resume and want you to come for an interview. An interview is the first impression an employer will receive of you. Here are some tips on how to make the most of the interview and a better chance at landing that job!

Before the Interview:

¨ Once you have been contacted about the interview, make sure you ask key questions to understand the interview format.

                 - How long will the interview be?

                 - How many interviewers will be present?

¨ Make sure you write down the time and      location of the interview and keep it with you.

¨ Research the department/position.

¨ Prepare questions to typical questions (a list of these  can be found on page 2).

¨ Plan your trip ahead of schedule to ensure a timely arrival.

                 - You should arrive at least 5-10 minutes                  before your scheduled interview time.

¨ Dress appropriately.

                 - Well groomed and neatly pressed.

During the Interview:

¨ Show respect to the  interviewers.

¨ Speak clearly and at an appropriate volume, do not mumble.

¨ Make eye contact.

¨ Show interest in the department/position by expressing the knowledge you gained in your research and how your skills would benefit them and this position.

After the Interview:

¨ Evaluate your performance, think about your strengths and weaknesses.

¨ Is there an area where you can improve for next time?

¨ Send a thank you note or e-mail to all of your interviewers.

Remember a happy worker makes for a more productive department!!

Job Hunting Strategies

  Whether looking for the perfect job, or just one that will pay the rent, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Þ What sort of department do you want to work for?

Þ What hours are you available?

Þ What interests you the most, and does this position favor your interests?

Þ Are your values challenged by working in this position?

Þ Are the employer’s expectations unattainable for you?

Job Fair Tips

Like speed dating, a job fair can be      exhilarating and scary at the same time. To get the most out of an Employment Fair and not be overwhelmed, remember the following:

Þ Dress professionally.

Þ Come early.

Þ Bring at least 20 copies of your    resumé.

Þ Introduce yourself and take notes.

Þ Prepare questions to ask the         employers.

Þ Speak with fellow job seekers,     networking can help.

Þ Follow-up and/or continue contact with those businesses/departments in which you are interested.

Typical Interview Questions:

Þ What skills do you possess that will make you successful in this department/position?

Þ What are your strengths/weaknesses?

Þ What are your long-range goals?

Þ Describe a challenge you    encountered and how you dealt with it.

Þ What would you wish to gain from this department/position?
