Discover the remarkable edible and medicinal plants growing all around us in Georgia’s forests and fields. Learn the basics of safe, responsible foraging from local expert, Era Pope, while exploring the rich traditions and practical uses of native plants. Finish with a tasting of locally crafted muscadine wine by Three Star Vineyard and Orchard, celebrating another of the South’s most iconic wild harvests. 

Speakers: Three Star Vineyard and Orchard, Johnston, South Carolina. This 100 acre hidden gem features a beautiful muscadine and scuppernong vineyard. Family owned and operated for more than 30 years, they are the largest grower and shipper in SC of these iconic native grapes.

Era Pope, MA, DipAC, LAc – a licensed acupuncturist operating Glowpoint Acupuncture in Bluffton, SC, and graduate of Jung Toa School of Chinese Medicine, Era has been an herbalist for many years, and provides treatments at the Holistic Wellness & Detox Center.

This short primer transforms your gardening potential, giving you the practical foundation to start seeds early and cultivate thriving plants.

Once stretching across 90 million acres in the Southeast, the longleaf pine is one of our country’s most diverse and endangered ecosystems. Explore its remarkable history, ecology, and ongoing restoration efforts with a conservation expert, and discover why protecting these forests matters for wildlife, fire resilience, and the future of our region. Guests will also enjoy a sampling of products from a Georgia distillery committed to longleaf conservation. 

Speakers:

Longleaf Distillery, Macon, GA. As Macon’s first craft distillery, their spirit line up offers vodka, gin, whiskies, and a unique series of liqueurs pulled from lost sources. Every purchase supports longleaf pine restoration across the south.

Carl Denhof, President of The Longleaf Alliance. Carol leads the organization in its mission to ensure a sustainable future for the longleaf pine ecosystem through partnerships, landowner assistance, and science-based education and outreach. Carol is a GSU alumni who has spent her rich career conserving Georgia ecosystems.

Long before coffee became America’s morning ritual, Indigenous peoples and early settlers brewed yaupon holly—the only naturally caffeinated plant native to North America. Discover the fascinating history, horticultural beauty, and wildlife value of this remarkable native shrub while sampling modern yaupon teas and learning how it is making a well-deserved comeback in gardens and cups alike. 

Speakers:

Lou Thomann, Founder of Yaupon Teahouse + Apothecary, Savannah, GA. Lou manages operations and harvest of yaupon holly on his Florida farm and process facility while also performing yaupon research on his farm in Metter, GA.

Todd Beasley, Director of the Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern University. Todd’s third public garden stop was at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden where he served as the Director of Horticulture and Facilities. This position allowed him a deeper level of resources that served as a professional learning experience from exposure to the vast world of available plants in the industry.

Roll up your sleeves and learn by doing! Our hands-on workshops provide step-by-step instruction on a variety of gardening, horticulture, and nature-inspired topics. Whether you’re creating something new, building practical skills, or exploring a new hobby, you’ll leave with fresh knowledge and something to take home.

Transform your ideas into a landscape you’ll love. Whether you’re starting with a blank slate or looking to refresh an existing yard, this two-part workshop introduces the fundamental principles and elements of residential landscape design through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on activities in the Garden. Led by the Botanic Garden Director, participants will learn how to evaluate a site, organize outdoor spaces, and create a simple conceptual landscape plan that is both beautiful and functional. 

Instructor: 

Todd Beasley, Director of the Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern University.  Past experiences include teaching landscape design at the community college level, designing areas in public gardens, and running his own business consulting and designing high-end residential gardens.

Celebrate the holiday season by creating a one-of-a-kind holiday wreath inspired by the beauty of winter landscapes. In this hands-on make-and-take workshop, participants will learn the basics of wreath design while incorporating a mix of evergreen foliage, natural botanical accents, and decorative materials. Leave with a beautiful custom wreath and the inspiration to bring the outdoors into your holiday decor. 

All materials are provided. Some natural plant materials are sustainably collected by Garden staff and are not available for public collection.

Branching Out: Connecting Campus & Community

Step out of the classroom and into the Garden for an adult educational series featuring Georgia Southern faculty and staff. Each expert-led talk explores the connections between the natural world through the lens of a different academic discipline, inviting the community to discover new ideas, ask questions, and engage in lifelong learning beyond the classroom.

Bring whatever makes you comfortable—a bagged lunch, afternoon snack, or a non-alcoholic beverage, —and settle in for an engaging hour of learning beneath the trees.

From recycling nutrients to solving crimes, insects play remarkable roles in both nature and forensic science. Join Dr. Ed Mondor for a fascinating spooky-season exploration of decomposition and the surprising clues insects provide during forensic investigations.

Continuing Education: Garden Learning Series

Spend time learning new skills in one of the most peaceful settings on campus. This series brings community members together for hands-on workshops led by local experts and Garden staff. Each session focuses on a different topic like gardening basics, nature crafts, seasonal projects, and simple ways to support a healthy landscape at home. Participants will get practical instruction, see demonstrations, and try techniques they can use in their own yards. All sessions take place at the Botanic Garden at Georgia Southern and are designed for beginners and hobbyists who enjoy learning by doing. Join us for a relaxed, welcoming experience that celebrates plants, creativity, and the natural spaces that make our region special.

Register for Continuing Education Learning Series

For this program, you will forage the Botanical Garden for organic specimens, arrange them on light-sensitive paper, and use direct Georgia sunlight to develop permanent, brilliant Prussian Blue prints. We will learn about how the cyanotype process started as a way to copy notes and diagrams to being able to develop photographs and film! No prior experience is required and all materials are provided.

Learn how to better understand the soil in your own garden and discover practical ways to create stronger, healthier growing conditions for your plants.

Dr. David Weindorf, Ph.D., P.G., FNAI, Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Executive Director – Research Service Foundation, Georgia Southern University. Dr. Weindorf is a Fellow and Presidential Award winner of the Soil Science Society of America. As a scientist, Dr. Weindorf has published >220 peer reviewed research papers in top journals pertaining to soil/water/compost science, environmental quality assessment, and soil taxonomy.
