The second video in the Faculty Spotlight series features Melissa Garno, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Nursing. Dr. Garno discusses her role in Georgia Southern’s nursing program, which has been nationally ranked among the best nursing schools for several years.

“Our team acted swiftly by immediately responding, cordoning off the area and evacuating the building,” said Michael Russell, chief of police. “Students, faculty and staff were notified within minutes by phone, text and email that there was an incident on campus and to stay put while officials investigated.”

“The Psychology Department’s achievement of accreditation for the Psy.D program provides the program and the Department with significant national recognition,” said Jean Bartels, Ph.D., provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “This prestigious accreditation will provide current and future students with the assurance that their program is of the highest quality and has recognition which will open doors for internships and employment after graduation.”

“We chose Michele Norris because of her reputation, professional accomplishments, and because of her initiative that she started in 2010, the Race Card Project, which encouraged a wider conversation about race among her readers and listeners,” said Dorsey Baldwin, director of the Multicultural Student Center. “We’ve even started the Race Card Project on our campus to get honest and open feedback from our students, faculty and staff.”

Three Georgia Southern professors have recently been awarded a more than $233,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to aid their research project titled “Identification of the sources of pathogens in wetland sediments and their influence on beach water quality.” Funded for one year, research is now underway.

Mychael Knight (‘01), former star of the Bravo network show “Project Runway,” will return to Georgia Southern University for a day of fashion on Friday, Dec. 5. Knight, a graduate of the University’s Fashion Merchandising & Apparel Design program, will visit Georgia Southern to answer questions from students,

Georgia Southern University will celebrate its annual Lighting of Sweetheart Circle on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. President Brooks A. Keel will flip the switch to commemorate the event.

The U.S. National Tick Collection (USNTC) at Georgia Southern University is temporarily closed to visitors and tours as it prepares for expansion and relocation. The collection will relocate to the Math and Physics building in an effort to provide additional space for specimens, storage, research and improved fire protection. The expected completion date is Spring 2015.
