
On April 1, producer and director Hal Jacobs will present an outdoor screening of his film, “Lillian Smith: Breaking the Silence,” on Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus. The screening, which will take place on the Residential Plaza, will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with Jacobs. The event is free and open to the public.

A strategic partnership between Georgia Southern University’s College of Education and the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has earned a top state accolade.

Georgia Southern University biology major Daria Stephens had never used a shovel until the 2021 Arbor Day Celebration on March 5, where she helped plant a tree near the Herty Pines Nature Preserve as part of her botany class. Stephens said the class inspired her to put what she is learning into action.

Georgia Southern University Theatre students on the Statesboro Campus will perform William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” directed by Sarah McCarroll, Ph.D., associate professor of theatre. The production will be available to stream March 10 through 14, and is free and open to the public.

The Georgia Southern University Academic Success Center has established the Barbara W. Bitter Scholarship, named after the former head of the Learning Support Department at Georgia Southern. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is March 8 at noon. Bitter was known around the state for her tenacity and fighting for students she believed were underprepared or underrepresented and deserved a chance in college. “Almost all students need a little extra help with funding their advanced education today and our nontraditional students have fewer opportunities to apply for scholarships,” said Theresa Novotny, coordinator of testing services. Since 2006, students at Georgia Southern University have been going on weeklong, immersive, issue-focused service experiences known as alternative breaks. Throughout the Alternative Breaks Program’s 15 years, participants like student Caleb Parker have helped communities overcome challenges while bettering themselves in the process.
Georgia Southern has been elected to serve as the home institution to the Georgia Association of Historians (GAH), following a vote by the organization’s board. Lisa L. Denmark, Ph.D., associate professor of history, is the GAH Executive Secretary-Treasurer. The GAH serves as a statewide professional organization for the study of history. The group encourages and promotes historical research, preservation, record keeping, publication and high standards in the teaching of history.
