With final accreditation, new Georgia Southern music industry degree ready to launch
Georgia Southern University’s Department of Music earned national accreditation for a new music industry degree, the final step for an innovative program that combines music, technology and entrepreneurship. Launching in the fall of 2021, the new music industry program will prepare musicians for evolving careers in music. The program curriculum combines a traditional degree with 21st-century technology and performance opportunities.

Georgia Southern hosting Youth Mental Health First Aid certification course
The Georgia Southern University Division of Continuing Education is hosting Youth Mental Health First Aid, a six-hour certification course for adults who work with youth. The virtual course will be taught by school-based therapist and licensed professional counselor Vanessa Brown on Feb. 15.

Center for Art and Theatre to host visiting contemporary art exhibition
The Georgia Southern University Center for Art and Theatre on the Statesboro Campus will host “Mode/Code,” a contemporary art exhibition featuring paint, textiles, illustration and digital exploration, through Feb. 12. A virtual artist talk will be on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. “I’ve followed the work of these artists for years,” said Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art Gallery Director Jason Hoelscher. “I have seen and shown some of their work before. Georgia NAACP President and Georgia Southern University alumnus Rev. James “Major” Woodall (’18), will serve as the 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. celebration speaker on Jan. 26 on the Armstrong Campus and on Jan. 27 on the Statesboro Campus.

Georgia Southern University Police Department applauded for exceeding training standards
The Georgia Southern University Police Department (UPD)continues to go above and beyond to ensure the University is a safe and better place to live and work. In an extraordinary achievement, a UPD group of 68 sworn employees – officers and dispatchers – completed 6,782 hours of training last year, averaging nearly 100 hours of training per officer.

Georgia Southern offering unique class for grandparents raising their grandchildren
The Georgia Southern University Division of Continuing Education is offering a class to help people parenting their grandchildren. The 90-minute virtual session will be taught on March 12 by Georgia Southern alumna Jessika Washington, director of special education for the Morgan County Charter School System.

Nearly 60% of Shirley Miller Scholarships Awarded to Georgia Southern University Students
The Zell Miller Foundation recently announced it awarded $50,000 in Shirley Miller Scholarships for the Spring 2021 semester to 127 HOPE Scholars at 13 public colleges and universities across Georgia. Of those 127 scholarships, 73 of them were awarded to Georgia Southern students, the most of any institution.

Renowned educational theorist, teacher educator to lead Georgia Southern 2021 Fries Lecture
Gloria Ladson-Billings, Ph.D., renowned pedagogical theorist, teacher educator and author, will present the 2021 Norman Fries Distinguished Lecture, hosted by Georgia Southern University’s College of Education. The lecture will take place virtually via Zoom on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Georgia Southern realizes goal of new Engineering and Research Building to equip students, researchers and industry
Georgia Southern has officially opened its new Engineering and Research Building for students and researchers, a facility that will serve as the epicenter for engineering excellence and innovation in southeast Georgia. The building is designed to facilitate academic and institutional partnerships, inspire creative engineering and accelerate academic success for students in the College of Engineering and Computing. Through the instructional research labs and academic spaces that bridge theory and practice, students will be prepared to solve today’s challenges and to make tomorrow’s discoveries.

Virtual Industry Expo a big success for Georgia Southern University engineering and computing students
The Allen. E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing at Georgia Southern University is hailing the success of its first-ever Industry Expo, which was held on Dec. 3. The event was envisioned to be held in person, but was hosted online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Industry Expo showcases the research and design projects of senior students in computer science, information technology, construction management and five engineering disciplines.
