
Georgia Southern University has invited six distinguished Georgians to serve as speakers for the Spring 2021 Commencement ceremonies on May 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13. The University will hold six commencement ceremonies for a mix of undergraduate and graduate students from each of the University’s 10 colleges. Salt marshes in south Georgia are in constant need of restoration due to rising sea levels. Georgia Southern University graduate student Alexander Gregory is leading a project on the Armstrong Campus to address the loss of marsh habitats by researching Spartina alterniflora, the dominant plant in Georgia salt marshes.

The Georgia Southern University Model Arab League (MAL), made up of 11 students and two faculty advisors, won two awards at the team’s inaugural appearance at the National University Model Arab League (NUMAL) conference in March. Georgia Southern University professor of biology and immunology expert, Traci Ness, Ph.D., will host a presentation and virtual Q&A session titled, “COVID Vaccines Unmasked: Questions and Answers from an Immunologist,” on the coronavirus vaccines. Yelena Tarasenko, DrPH, an associate professor in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences in Georgia Southern’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, is one of four awardees of a 2020 Yamagiwa-Yoshida Memorial International Cancer Study Grant by the Union for International Cancer Control.
