
As a niña, Georgia Southern University mechanical engineering major Ana Abadie and her father spent hours watching airplanes taxi, take off and land at Toncontín International Airport located in Tegucigalpa, her hometown and the Honduran capital.

Regional entrepreneurs looking to grow their businesses now have access to an accelerated business growth and leadership development program through the Georgia Southern University Business Innovation Group (BIG).

Nearly 50 student entrepreneurs from Georgia Southern University will showcase their products, goods or services on Friday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. in downtown Statesboro during the first-ever Market on Main.

Georgia Southern University’s long-term commitment to veteran student success has a boost thanks to a U.S. Department of Education grant. The grant, totaling almost $459,000, is to establish a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success (CEVSS) on all three of Georgia Southern University’s campuses, located in Savannah, Statesboro and Hinesville. The CEVSS goal is to increase enrollment and retention of the University’s veteran students. The awarded amount will be paid out over three years.
Georgia Southern University’s latest Economic Monitor, which reflects Q2 2021, reports that the Savannah metro area economy surged for the third-consecutive quarter through the midpoint of the year. “All major indicators of the regional economy increased during the second quarter,” stated Michael Toma, Ph.D., Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Economics. “Tourism indicators skyrocketed along with consumer confidence. Employment growth was steady and sustainable, while port activity and electricity sales contributed more modestly to regional growth.”

Nandi A. Marshall, DrPH, (’12) has been appointed as the new Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Georgia Southern University’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health.

Michael Pemberton, Ph.D., was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) at the 2021 International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference. Pemberton holds the rank of professor in the Department of Writing and Linguistics, and he directs the University Writing Center in Statesboro.
