Georgia Southern hosts Science on Tap in Savannah on Nov. 14
Chemistry will be the topic of the next Science on Tap lecture, which will be held at Savannah Coffee Roasters in Savannah on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. Richard Wallace, Ph.D., a chemistry professor on the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus, will present, “The Connection Between Rubber, Goldenrod, Paint, & Soybeans: Two Stories from Agricultural Chemistry.”
Georgia Southern professors named Governor’s Teaching Fellows
Professor of Geography Wei Tu, Ph.D., and Writing and Linguistics Lecturer Amanda Hedrick have been selected as Governor’s Teaching Fellows for the 2019-2020 academic year. Tu, from the College of Science and Mathematics, and Hedrick, from the College of the Arts and Humanities, are two of 17 fellows selected this year.
Georgia Southern helping rural teachers introduce renewable energy into classrooms
This year marks the third summer that 10 teachers from rural areas in Georgia have come to Georgia Southern University to learn more about renewable energy. Faculty from the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) and the College of Education helped the teachers bring renewable energy projects and practices into their classrooms.

While most people tend to avoid ticks, Jackson Tomlinson, a graduate student in the Department of Biology finds them fascinating and beautiful. His interest in the parasites was recently rewarded with the discovery of two species of ticks that are entirely new to science.

Georgia Southern project to be funded by $50,000 Teagle Foundation grant
Georgia Southern University English professor, Teresa Winterhalter, Ph.D., and her team have been awarded a planning grant of $50,000 by The Teagle Foundation for their project, “Narrative Competence for Nurses: The Liberal Arts in the Professions.” The project is a humanities-based, eight-week module that will supplement the gateway course for students entering the nursing program.
Site-synchronous classrooms at Georgia Southern connecting students on all three campuses
Georgia Southern University is showing that the distance between its three campuses is just a number for students by introducing the site-synchronous classrooms pilot program, which uses state-of-the-art cameras in classrooms to connect students in Statesboro, Savannah and Hinesville.

Georgia Southern Counseling Center, Director honored by Georgia College Counseling Association
The Georgia Southern University Counseling Center was awarded Clinical Program of the Year for its Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology program at the Georgia College Counseling Association 26th Annual Conference in St. Simons Island. In addition, Counseling Center Executive Director, Jodi K. Caldwell, Ph.D., was awarded College Counseling Director of the Year.
Georgia Southern anthropology professor helps preserve oral history of commercial fishing in Georgia
Georgia Southern Anthropology Professor Jennifer Sweeney Tookes, along with University of Georgia (UGA) Associate Director of Marine Extension Bryan Fluech, will help to preserve the oral history and culture of commercial fishing in Georgia for current and future generations by presenting research at three outreach events on Jan. 31 in Statesboro, Feb. 1 in Darien and Feb. 2 in Brunswick.
